Abstract

The Tropical Cyclone Cempaka in 2017 caused significant damage to infrastructure and settlements in Desa Sriharjo and Selopamioro, Kabupaten Bantul. In disaster mitigation efforts, the utilization of geospatial technology and visual media is an important aspect of improving public understanding. This study aims to reconstruct the pre-disaster landscape and simulate flood situations using the integration of digital photogrammetry and a 3D Game Engine. The applied method involves aerial photo acquisition using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) with Ground Control Points (GCP) measurements to generate an accurate Digital Terrain Model (DTM). The spatial data is processed in Unity3D through terrain formation, texturing, the addition of 3D environmental assets, and the programming of atmospheric and hydrological effect simulations. This research produced three visual products: a 360° Virtual Reality (VR) video, a bird’s-eye view animation, and a PC game application. Product evaluation was conducted through a survey of 57 respondents. The results showed that 93% of users felt a sense of presence in the virtual location, and 63.2% experienced an emotional response to the flood simulation. This study demonstrates that the integration of Geographic Information System (GIS) data and game engine technology can be applied as an immersive disaster education medium.
