Abstract

This research aims to analyze the communication challenges and cultural adaptation process experienced by Indonesian students in Edinburgh, Scotland. Using a qualitative method, this research involved in-depth interviews with two postgraduate students at Edinburgh University. The findings show that international students face major communication challenges related to cultural differences, accents, social norms, and punctuality. Nonetheless, they managed to overcome these challenges through adaptation strategies, such as observation, communication skill development, and support from the international student community and social media. This adaptation process not only introduced them to the local culture, but also strengthened their Indonesian cultural identity. This research provides insights into how international students can overcome communication challenges and utilize cross-cultural experiences to enrich their understanding of local and global cultures. In addition, this study also suggests the role of universities in supporting international students through cultural orientation programs and communication training.
