Digital Communication Ethics in Responding to Hate Comments on Instagram

Social media, as part of the development of digital communication, has provided an open space for individuals to express their opinions widely. However, this freedom is often misinterpreted and exploited to post hateful comments, which indicates a low level of ethical awareness in interacting in the digital world. This study aims to examine the phenomenon of hate comments on Instagram as an form of communication ethics violation and to explore philosophical approaches to communication as an alternative solution. The method used in this study is library research by reviewing relevant literature. The findings indicate that addressing hate comments is not sufficient by cultivation of ethical values within users. These values include moral autonomy, social responsibility, and virtue ethics. Digital ethics is positioned as the foundation for building healthy, humane, and civilized communication. Therefore, moral awareness in communicating in the digital space needs to be instilled so that the interactions created are not only free but also responsible and ethical.
