This study aims to explore the interpersonal communication between Indonesian migrant workers (caregivers) and elderly patients with dementia in Taiwan based on penetration social theory. Using a qualitative approach, data was collected through participatory observation and in-depth interviews. The findings show that caregivers apply the principles of effective interpersonal communication by Joseph A. DeVito. Namely, openness, empathy, supportive attitude, positive attitude, and equality in their interactions. Social penetration in the relationship between caregivers and the elderly is also reflected in light interactions and repeated empathic actions. Although in the process they faced semantic and human constraints, caregivers managed to overcome these challenges with a patient and adaptive attitude, creating a safe and comfortable care environment. The results of this study are expected to contribute to improving the quality of care and strengthening interpersonal relationships between caregivers and patients.
