Abstract

The creative economy focuses on the increasing contributions to the economy by ideas, culture, and other forms of intellectual property. Economic growth can be driven by these forms of culture. Kampung Batik Laweyan is the oldest batik-producing area in Surakarta and is a member of the UN Creative Cities of Crafts and Folk Art Network (UCCN). With a long history and immense cultural and economic importance, the current state of this area still needs proper development and, most of all, the creative milieu (physically and non-physically). The purpose of this research is to measure the extent to which the creative milieu of Kampung Batik Laweyan is ready to be a creative district. A quantitative method was used, via scoring analysis for six selected variables: land use, infrastructure, accessibility, heritage sites, institutional capacity, and marketing promotion. The main data collection methods used were observation, document study, spatial mapping, and the Likert scale method, with qualitative analysis on each score. The result of this study indicated that Kampung Batik Laweyan scored 43, which is an average of 14, and is therefore classi contextualized as “ready”. The variables that show the highest levels of readiness include accessibility and heritage areas. The biggest challenge comes from land use. Built-up areas take up most of the space. Green open spaces stay pretty limited. In general, the area looks ready to serve as a creative economy district. It fits well within the creative milieu framework. Still, people need to step in more with spatial planning. Institutional collaboration has to become more integrated too.
