Long-Term Impact of Pesantren English Programs on Alumni Self-Efficacy and Communication Confidence

Abstract
This study explores the long-term impact of pesantren-based English language programs on alumni self-efficacy and speaking confidence. While previous studies have focused on students’ immediate language development, limited attention has been given to how these programs influence graduates after leaving the institutional environment. Drawing on Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, this research examines how learning experiences in pesantren contribute to sustained confidence in English communication. A qualitative method was employed, involving semi-structured interviews with six alumni and two teachers from Pesantren Modern At-Taqwa Bogor. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis based on four sources of self-efficacy: mastery experiences, verbal persuasion, vicarious experiences, and physiological and affective states. The findings reveal that intensive speaking practices, supportive feedback, role modeling, and emotional adaptation during pesantren education significantly contribute to alumni confidence in both academic and workplace contexts. However, challenges such as limited opportunities for real-life communication and fluctuating motivation remain evident after graduation. This study highlights that pesantren English programs not only enhance language proficiency but also foster long-term self-efficacy and communicative confidence. The findings provide important implications for developing sustainable, experience-based language learning models in similar educational settings.
