Effectiveness of an Ethnomathematics-Based E-Module on Malay Songket Fabric in Improving Students’ Mathematical Literacy Skills

Abstract
Mathematical literacy is an essential competency that enables students to apply mathematical concepts in real-life situations. However, Indonesian students continue to demonstrate relatively low mathematical literacy performance, highlighting the need for innovative and contextual learning resources. This study aimed to determine the validity and effectiveness of an ethnomathematics-based e-module on Malay songket fabric in improving students’ mathematical literacy skills in transformation geometry learning. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model. The participants were 29 ninth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Pulo Bandring in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through material expert validation sheets, media expert validation sheets, and mathematical literacy tests administered through a pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative analysis, normalized gain (N-gain), and classical learning mastery criteria. The results indicated that the developed e-module was categorized as very valid, with validation scores of 85.9% from the material expert and 85.7% from the media expert. Students’ mathematical literacy scores improved from a mean pretest score of 68.14 to a mean posttest score of 81.07, with an N-gain score of 0.41 in the moderate category. Classical learning mastery reached 96.55%. These findings indicate that the ethnomathematics-based e-module on Malay songket fabric is valid and effective in improving students’ mathematical literacy skills.
